Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate bar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup oil (avocado, vegetable, or canola)
  • 1¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1¼ cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 8-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. Melt the semisweet chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter, oil, and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture and buttermilk to the wet ingredients alternately.
  6. Divide the batter into two bowls; mix melted chocolate into one half.
  7. Alternate spoonfuls of vanilla and chocolate batters into the prepared pans and swirl gently with a knife.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool before frosting.
